A re-telling of Madonna's short film Secret.Project.Revolution

Economic markets are collapsing. People all over the world are suffering and people are afraid, and what happens when people are afraid? They become intolerant. They start pointing the finger at other people. They say, “You’re the reason! You’re the problem! You’re to blame! Get out!”

The enemy is not out there. The enemy is within!

I did my tour of duty this year. It feels like I’ve been to hell and back. I saw many things I did not like. I saw apathy. I saw intolerance. I saw desperation and poverty. I saw discrimination and bigotry… and a kind of sinister black cloud of hypocrisy moving in on me… like a curtain of despair. Yeah that’s right! I saw the lack of desire like a plague… putting everyone in a kind of a trance. And I looked into the eyes of people and I saw helplessness, I saw hopelessness, I saw humans searching for a way out… another new and exciting distraction… an excuse to do nothing… an external enemy to blame. But I also saw people desperate for a way in… Looking for guidance… looking for inspiration… for hope… looking for love…

I keep telling everyone that I want to start a revolution, but no one is taking me seriously. If I had a black skin and an afro, would you take me seriously? If I was an arab weighing a hand grenade, would you take me seriously? If I had a combat gear and an AK-47 strapped to my back, would you take me seriously? Instead, I am a woman, a blonde… I have tits and an ass… and an insatiable desire to be noticed. “Come on baby! Show us your ass! Shake it for us baby! Do that dance you do so well for us baby.”

But I still want to start a revolution.

Somebody’s got to…

There’s too much beauty in the world going to waste…
Too much talent going unnoticed…
Too much creativity being crushed beneath the will of corporate branding and what’s trending.
But it’s time to wake up… before its late.
History is repeating itself. Don’t you see a pattern here?
We live in a very scary time.
Or should I say we don’t really live at all.

Democracy doesn’t seem to exist anymore. ‘Freedom of Expression’ sounds like a catch-phrase.
And if you want to be an artist in this day and age, you better have strong arms. You better be prepared to swim upstream in shark-infested waters… You better have thick skin. Because when those fascist dictators posing as righteous men come for you, with their big leather boots to shut you up… to put a gag in your mouth… to send you away to Repeal Colony… You better be prepared to fight for what you believe in. I used to think I had thick skin. Right now it feels like I have no skin. Like I’ve been skinned alive. You better be prepared to die for what you believe in.

I don’t sleep anymore. I’ve lost my appetite. I don’t feel safe. Lots of people don’t feel safe. That’s why I want to start a revolution. But this revolution will not be televised, it will not be on the internet, it won’t be an app available on your iPhone. You won’t be able to download it.

All In This Together

This will be a revolution of thinking for yourself.. of having your own opinion and not giving a damn of what people say… This will be a revolution of enquiring further… of not worrying about winning other people’s approval… of not wishing you were someone else but perfectly content to be who you are… someone unique… and rare… and fearless… I want to start a revolution of love. And this revolution will overcome all fear and  all suffering and all separation and it will include all people: Black, white, christian, chinese, muslim, jew, gay, straight, bisexual, fat, thin, handicapped, rich, poor, artistic and autistic! Fuck the labels. I hate labels. We’re all in this ship together, sailing like a burning spear across the sea. Burn! Baby, burn!

I feel the people are becoming more and more afraid of people who are different. People are becoming more and more intolerant. We want to fight for the right to be free. Free to be who we are. Yes? Yes!

It’s a very severe time. But we can make the difference. We can change this. We have the power. And we don’t have to do it with violence. We just have to do it with love! Jesus preached this. Muhammed preached this. Buddha preached this. Moses preached this. It’s in every holy book: “Love thy neighbor as thyself!” Okay? So you cannot use religion to treat other people badly. You cannot use God’s name, to treat other people badly. We all deserve love.

I’m not gonna make it alone. I’m sure you can relate. Sometimes I wanna beat myself up. Sometimes I say to myself, “Why didn’t I wait? Why did I listen to all those voices in my head? Why didn’t I have patience? Why did I let all that doubt into my head, into my belief system. Why?

I know what you’re thinking…

“If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen.”

But it’s too late. I’m in the kitchen. And the burner’s on full blaze.

I want to start a revotution.

Are you with me?

This film is dedicated to those who have been persecuted, are being persecuted, or may be persecuted.

For the color of their skin. Their religious beliefs. Their artistic expression. Their gender. Or their sexual preferences. Anyone whose human rights have been violated.

No material in the article is original. It has been taken from speech elements of Madonna’s short film Secret.Project.Revolution (alongside MDNA Tour, Rebel Heart Tour and Rebel Heart album.)

I felt this was an important message to share. Sometimes we need to stand up for what is right.

#JeSuisCharlie – What Has Violence Achieved?

  • The Charlie Hebdo incident in Paris on January 7, 2015, indeed shook the world. The attackers (reportedly) claimed that they “avenge for Prophet Mohammed” and went on killed 12 including editor of the satirical magazine. The suspects of the attack (or someone from among their group or someone else entirely… too soon to be sure) have continued notoriously to cause havoc.
  • Also a few thousand miles away, more than 2000 people were killed in the “deadliest-so-far” Boko Haram killings in Nigeria, in Baga and surrounding towns, around the same time as the Paris siege. The Islamist militant group Boko Haram targeted school children, police officers, religious officials and civilians. Several houses were razed, causing displacement of 30,000 people.
  • And if this was not enough, on January 9, 2015, Saudi Arabian activist Raif Badawi started receiving started receiving his punishment of 1000 lashes publicly outside Al-Juffali mosque in Jeddah, in addition to 10 years in prison, for being “Prisoner of Conscience”. The punishment is a result of the activist using his Freedom of Speech on his website, which were seen by the authorities as heretic to the Islamic belief system.

And these are only three of the many unfair events happening in the world at this very time.

What do these killings imply? What do they speak about the state of humanity? Is this what we have reduced ourselves to? And what can one say about the reactions these events are receiving?

First thing that was absolutely ridiculous was the criticism of Islam and the entire community being targeted for the actions and beliefs of a few individuals. We all need to understand this VERY CLEARLY that though there are fragments of the community that are oppressive and intolerant and violent… That doesn’t make it true for all of them. The troublemakers are just a few bad eggs. Don’t blame the basket especially when you don’t know all of its contents.

Talking of the bad eggs… It is heartbreaking. Even though it has sort of become ‘an everyday thing’, Dying People is not a joke. And if you believe that taking lives in the name of God or Religion is justified, then your idea of God and Religion are a joke. You NEED to educate yourself on both.

No peace or victory or heavens are achieved over the blood of unsuspecting children and civilians.

What are the reasons for the violence and all the debates that have followed it… The crazy part is NOT that everyone wants to have an opinion… It is that Everyone want their opinion to be seen as the right one, and get offended if somebody disagrees.

We need to understand that everyone is entitled to an opinion and none of them are necessarily right at all times. You can either agree or disagree, but please don’t shred away the last patches of dignity in trying to PROVE you are right and they are wrong. As you see above, there are enough people doing that already.

And all those who are getting into all kinds of “intellectual” political and religious discussions about the events and justifying the correctness of anyone… Is it solving anything? Is it making anyone’s lives better? Will it make the situations better? If not, then please keep your mouth shut.

The Charlie Hebdo incident resulted in the Je Suis Charlie campaign (in French, it means “I Am Charlie“). But in reality  it translates to I Am Human – Je Suis Humaine. Because we all are entitled to say what we want and live a dignified life. And no terror will stop us from doing that. Period.

“People are being killed for being themselves. Isn’t that enough to worry about?”

– The Bitter Fruit

Yours truthfully….

People are stupid!

That’s a fact that we can’t ignore. And many of them are greedy, vicious, destructive and believe in violence (not just physical). Many more are air-headed and they will believe practically anything they are told (Heard of “herd mentality”?). Give them one signal and all of them will come on the streets (or Twitter) to shout and whine… WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING THE WHOLE THING: “Really, who has time to verify facts? There is noise to make!”

And now among all of this mass confusion of the people, by the people, for the people… there’s a handful who get stuck and are given no chance to disagree. In the era of deception, with nearly everyone (disgustingly) lowering their standards to make more and more money, somebody needs to wake up and talk it out and that’s why we are in this conversation. The truth may be uncomfortable and there’s a possibility we not always want to agree, but it’s still better than living in “perfect world” delusion where “I am always right”. So that’s exactly what this blog is about – reality check on what we know and what we feel.

Welcome to The Bitter Fruit!
