Bitter #Beauty Standards

“If it is pretty, it must be good. If it is ugly, it must be bad.”
That, sadly, is something we are taught ever since we are kids. It’s in our very upbringings and social environments that condition us to favour and dismiss purely on what we PERCEIVE and not on their individual realities.

We tend to believe that the fair skin is better, being fat isn’t the best thing, flawless skin is more desirable, being tall is great.

Appealing traits these are… but we fail to realize that not all of us have all of these. And that it’s PERFECTLY ALRIGHT to be not fair, or have freckles or be short or chubby. And there is no need to feel bad about it. We failed and the commercial industry noticed. They decided to use this insecurity of ours to their advantage.

If you’ve heard of “Make Up”, ” Lighting” and “Photoshop”, these are extensively used to project to you a completely impossible standard of beauty you could compare yourself to. And since you obviously aren’t anything like it, you’d be pushed to buy their products or services in hopes you’d get a bit more closer to that.

Then again, that is the very foundation of Marketing and Advertising. They make you realize you lack something and they have what you need. While a foolproof strategy, they don’t realize how badly they are affecting our minds and lives and our sense of worth. We tend to spend money on things that we don’t really need that might even be harming us under the pretext of doing us good.

We have become an increasingly insecure consumerist society. But who is to be blamed?

We are at a point where something needs to change. We need to learn that outer beauty is not everything, and there is so much more to people and things than how they appear. Outer beauty is not only overrated, but it also overshadows whatever lies underneath. You never know you’d something even more beautiful or something really ugly once you see the insides.
Senses can deceive you. And that’s one truth even the Fairy Tales don’t refrain from telling you. Gives us something to think about!

#JeSuisCharlie – What Has Violence Achieved?

  • The Charlie Hebdo incident in Paris on January 7, 2015, indeed shook the world. The attackers (reportedly) claimed that they “avenge for Prophet Mohammed” and went on killed 12 including editor of the satirical magazine. The suspects of the attack (or someone from among their group or someone else entirely… too soon to be sure) have continued notoriously to cause havoc.
  • Also a few thousand miles away, more than 2000 people were killed in the “deadliest-so-far” Boko Haram killings in Nigeria, in Baga and surrounding towns, around the same time as the Paris siege. The Islamist militant group Boko Haram targeted school children, police officers, religious officials and civilians. Several houses were razed, causing displacement of 30,000 people.
  • And if this was not enough, on January 9, 2015, Saudi Arabian activist Raif Badawi started receiving started receiving his punishment of 1000 lashes publicly outside Al-Juffali mosque in Jeddah, in addition to 10 years in prison, for being “Prisoner of Conscience”. The punishment is a result of the activist using his Freedom of Speech on his website, which were seen by the authorities as heretic to the Islamic belief system.

And these are only three of the many unfair events happening in the world at this very time.

What do these killings imply? What do they speak about the state of humanity? Is this what we have reduced ourselves to? And what can one say about the reactions these events are receiving?

First thing that was absolutely ridiculous was the criticism of Islam and the entire community being targeted for the actions and beliefs of a few individuals. We all need to understand this VERY CLEARLY that though there are fragments of the community that are oppressive and intolerant and violent… That doesn’t make it true for all of them. The troublemakers are just a few bad eggs. Don’t blame the basket especially when you don’t know all of its contents.

Talking of the bad eggs… It is heartbreaking. Even though it has sort of become ‘an everyday thing’, Dying People is not a joke. And if you believe that taking lives in the name of God or Religion is justified, then your idea of God and Religion are a joke. You NEED to educate yourself on both.

No peace or victory or heavens are achieved over the blood of unsuspecting children and civilians.

What are the reasons for the violence and all the debates that have followed it… The crazy part is NOT that everyone wants to have an opinion… It is that Everyone want their opinion to be seen as the right one, and get offended if somebody disagrees.

We need to understand that everyone is entitled to an opinion and none of them are necessarily right at all times. You can either agree or disagree, but please don’t shred away the last patches of dignity in trying to PROVE you are right and they are wrong. As you see above, there are enough people doing that already.

And all those who are getting into all kinds of “intellectual” political and religious discussions about the events and justifying the correctness of anyone… Is it solving anything? Is it making anyone’s lives better? Will it make the situations better? If not, then please keep your mouth shut.

The Charlie Hebdo incident resulted in the Je Suis Charlie campaign (in French, it means “I Am Charlie“). But in reality  it translates to I Am Human – Je Suis Humaine. Because we all are entitled to say what we want and live a dignified life. And no terror will stop us from doing that. Period.

“People are being killed for being themselves. Isn’t that enough to worry about?”

– The Bitter Fruit

Yours truthfully….

People are stupid!

That’s a fact that we can’t ignore. And many of them are greedy, vicious, destructive and believe in violence (not just physical). Many more are air-headed and they will believe practically anything they are told (Heard of “herd mentality”?). Give them one signal and all of them will come on the streets (or Twitter) to shout and whine… WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING THE WHOLE THING: “Really, who has time to verify facts? There is noise to make!”

And now among all of this mass confusion of the people, by the people, for the people… there’s a handful who get stuck and are given no chance to disagree. In the era of deception, with nearly everyone (disgustingly) lowering their standards to make more and more money, somebody needs to wake up and talk it out and that’s why we are in this conversation. The truth may be uncomfortable and there’s a possibility we not always want to agree, but it’s still better than living in “perfect world” delusion where “I am always right”. So that’s exactly what this blog is about – reality check on what we know and what we feel.
